Christmas was first
introduced to China in the 19th century by foreign missionaries. On December
25th, churches around the world conduct celebrative worships, some starting
at midnight, and Christmas dramas, to spread the message on the birth
of Christ.
In France, Christmas is viewed as a time for family reunions and a day
of thanksgiving. The French has a special fondness for food and one of
the most popular French cuisines for Christmas is Canard Au Sang, a duck
dish that has to be prepared with finesse. In restaurants, the duck is
cooked and its legs and breast are removed and put on a plate. Then the
juice from the duck is collected in copperware to be cooked into a rich
gravy and poured onto the dish of duck legs and breast in front of the
customer so that he can enjoy the authentic taste of the duck meat. Other
Xˇ¦mas dishes include turkey, goose liver, caviar, and venison. At midnight,
the French people go to church for a thanksgiving gathering with relatives
and friends. After that, they go home for dessert.
The legend of Santa Claus differs from country to country. In Holland,
Santa Claus and his assistant review a thick book with recordings of every
childˇ¦s performance, such as his scholastic achievements and whether
he is obedient at home. Those who have behaved well the entire year are
rewarded with a gift, while those disobedient ones are to be taken away
by Santaˇ¦s assistant.
In Germany, Santa Claus, accompanied by his assistant, carries a huge
bag of presents on his back, and a cane in his hand. Good children are
given presents while the naughty ones are spanked.
Christmas is a festive season often celebrated with rich, crispy, and
oily food that is most appetizing. To balance the diet, eat more vegetables
and fruits to ensure that you have a most enjoyable Christmas.
